Hootsuite: New Features! Exciting!

I love Hootsuite.

It took me (seriously) a while to get comfortable with it. But now I just adore it.

I mean, all the volume of content still is a bit much at times.

But overall it works well for me and I haven’t even considered using any other similar program.

I schedule messages quite a bit, since I’m working under the belief that having tweets spaced at least 45 – 60 minutes apart is optimal. My actual work life doesn’t allow for being with Twitter all day long every day. So the time I do have, I use to gather content and send it out again – in the future.

Now, that is one area that I’ve been less than enthusiastic about – the scheduling. I mean, it’s worked fine as far as doing what it’s supposed to do. But when I’m scheduling 8 messages for a work day ahead, first thing in the morning, it’s not easy to keep all those times in mind to fit new things in to the stream optimally.

I didn’t really fret about it though, I figured with all they have going on, they would probably be addressing that.

And now Hootsuite has made all my dreams come true. There is a ‘Publisher’ window, 2nd-from-the-top over on the left side, which shows you all your scheduled tweets! And, more than that, you are able to revise your scheduled times for any of the scheduled tweets! And you can edit the tweets themselves!

I am extremely happy. Now the process of tweeting is much closer to the process of good writing – you can brainstorm basically, set up various tweets. Leave it for a bit. Then come back to it, go in to ‘Publisher,’ and edit what you’ve written as you look at the full set of items all together.

Maybe you were going to re-tweet one particular item about a new development, that had a link to a good source of information about that development. A little bit later, you come across a better reporting of that new development. Before, it didn’t matter. That tweet you had scheduled was gone, you had no way to revise it, you just had to live with it.

Now that artificial ceiling on the quality of your tweets has been removed! You find better content, you can replace that in!

Each tweet you send can now be its actual best self!

Brickfish Contest _ Social Media site report

So, now that the contest is over, it’s interesting to see the viral map of all the activity.

Lots of new sites explored!

I thought I’d type up the list here of sites we posted to, activity per site, and so on.

Most of this list is pretty clear, it will say BF (meaning Brickfish) and then a small number (1-3 usually), that’s the number of times the link was posted from Brickfish to that site or platform. Then a larger number, and that larger number is somewhat mysterious. It has to do with activity levels from that site – could be views as well as votes. Because I believe that if I add up all those larger numbers, it doesn’t equal views exactly, or votes, or the sum of the two. I believe it’s a proportional indication of both view and votes, from that site vs. the total activity.

The complicated part is when the contest was posted to a site, then posted from there to another site. If you look at the map itself you’ll see what I mean.

So, may add/clarify this more as time allows, but wanted to share this in case of interest.

BF – 1 – Instapaper – 4
BF – 1 – Indexor – 21
BF – 1 – Other – 374
(would *reallly* like to know what this is!)
BF – 4 – Facebook – 102 – posted 1 to different Facebook page – 2

BF – 1 – Hi5 – 13 (activity measure)
posted from that Hi5 site as follows:
Hi5 – 1 – MySpace – 29
Hi5 – 1 – LiveJournal – 12
Hi5 – 1 – Xanga – 1

BF – 4 – MySpace – 29 (activity measure)
posted from MySpace as follows:
MySpace – 1 – LiveJournal – 1

BF – 1 – Bebo – 19
BF – 1 – Blogspot – 84
BF – 1 – Twitturls – 4
BF – 1 – Hootsuite – 77
BF – 1 – TypePad – 27
BF – 1 – Email – 1386
BF – 1 – tinyurl – 14
BF – 1 – WordPress – 72
BF – 1 – Tumblr – 101
BF – 1 – Longurl – 8
BF – 1 – LinkedIn – 8
BF – 1 – EfolioMN – 11
BF – 1 – LiveJournal – 15
BF – 1 – Xanga – 2
BF – 1 – Stumbleupon – 4
BF – 1 – mn – 8
BF – 1 – Twitter – 46

If you want to see the other, more viral sites, you can go to the right side bar that says ‘Other Entries’ than below those 4 pics or so, there is a link that says ‘see more.’ That brings you to the whole list. At the very top of that front page of the whole list, there are headers that you can sort by. One of them is ‘Most Viral’. This entry of ours is #21 I believe!

For history on what this was all about, please see the posts tagged as Brickfish. Long story short, my daughter entered in to this contest, and asked for my help. I decided to use the contest as a springboard to implementing more social media for my company, and an impetus to learn more about the functions I had been using. Clarity Solutions did not establish a presence on all these – not MySpace of course. And some of these I didn’t have anything to do with. But the involvement I did have completely met my goals for it!

PS The ‘winners’ haven’t been announced yet. The prizes aren’t that substantial anyway, I was really just interested to see what actions would yield what results, how our efforts compared to others, etc.. And I really appreciate all those of you who helped!!

Social Media Experiment log – Day 8 (or so).

First, here’s the Brickfish contest link, which I’m involved in through a family member.

Ok, so last week was frenzy week, establishing web presence right and left, Tweeting and Stumbling and LiveJournaling and everything. Take away: there is a LOT going on in the internets! There are many choices to make and intentionalities to establish. I am excited about the nuances and varieties available for every possible message to every single particular distinct audience. Breathtaking!

Secondly, the contest itself has been like an amusement park ride. I’ve learned a lot through it.

It does provide gratification – when you post to another platform and there are votes – it shows on the viral map! But the gratification is delayed, and is not in a 1:1 correspondence with reality – the numbers for each platform are, I think, a proportion – but am not sure. I’m sure they aren’t votes specifically or views specifically either. So there’s response to action, but also a kind of looseness that makes it even more interesting sort of. I’ve learned about various platforms, and also about the Brickfish contest itself.

Sometimes I’ve learned about Brickfish that there is nothing to ‘learn’ – that sufficient information is not available. And that’s fine.. I would just like to know beyond that point sometimes.. For instance, I’m very curious about ‘other,’ which has aggregated a lot of activity. I first thought that was where sites with less activity were accumulated, but Hi5 and Xanga and MySpace showed up with ‘1’ and ‘2’ and so on. Kind of rules that out. So now I’m wondering – is it sites not based in the US? Non-English-language sites? Some whole other categorization completely? Would love to know..

I like the viral map a lot, but since all of us established it on so many platforms, it got really teensy tiny. And it doesn’t genie! Would be cool if it did the Apple-Dock thing, expanding on mouse-over, then contracting again.

You can expand the whole viral map, which makes it not fit in the window, then you can move the map around to see all of it bit by bit. So that works.

Also the Geo view is very interesting. According to it, all the views from Minnesota (where we’re from) total only about 1/4 of the views of this picture. I find that very surprising – I mean I appreciate everyone’s interest, but really? Just surprises me.

Then the whole mechanics as far as how often it was possible to vote, that’s been provocative. At first it was clearly once every 12 hours per browser/os/computer. Then sometimes the waiting period was 10 hours. Then… sometimes only 3 hours! Sometimes the browser would say ‘you can vote again in 7 hours’ for instance, I’d refresh half an hour later and it would say ‘you can vote in 1 hr’. I don’t know what to make of it! That sort of thing can almost become compelling, in and of itself.

Overall, I have to say it’s been a great fit for my own process, since I have this entity (Clarity Solutions) and my site-members and all, and I’ve been wanting to explore platforms and become more proficient with Hootsuite and all. It’s been Completely Perfect for that process of mine. Like when I was learning a new language, and at that point was working in the suburbs and had an hour-long commute, and so could listen to my language CD the whole time. A perfect fit.

I hope I haven’t been too pushy about it! On the other hand, any views/votes always welcome, and any ideas about further promotions (runs till 2/9) are very welcome! But also about staying this side of excessive..

Win/win is always my goal!
